The Midwest's pre-Eurosettlement natural communities are largely the product of wildfire. In the time since European settlement, the unnatural absence of fire has led to devastating successional change in these communities. Succession favors shade-tolerant species and selects against  (and thus critically imperils) shade-intolerant species. The ecological health of your property may thus be dependant upon the reintroduction of fire.

Experience

Offering prescribed fire services since our inception in 1997, Driftless Land Stewardship LLC is the largest prescribed fire provider in the region. On the most rugged terrain in the Midwest, our crews burn over 1000 acres annually. When it comes to extreme topography, varied natural communities, and the wildland / urban interface; DLS burns it regularly.

Leadership

Prescribed Fire Program Manager, Jaye Maxfield, NWCG FFT1, has over a decade of wildland fire experience, extensive NWCG training and has been leading burns professionally since 1998.

Training

Prescribed fire is an inherently dangerous and complex service. DLS understands the importance of training to ensure a safe and effective product and to ensure the future of prescribed fire.

DLS strives to meet National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards (a difficult feat considering the agency-centric nature of the standards and the relative youth of the prescribed fire industry).  

All DLS crew members:

Have completed, at minimum, NWCG I-100/S-130/S-190

Undergo annual NWCG physical fitness pack test

Receive NWCG Annual Fireline Safety Refresher Training

All line bosses meet  NWCG standards

Teamwork

With of full-time staff of eleven wildland firefighters and a large pool of on-call FFT2 firefighters, DLS is able to provide burn crews with high degree of crew cohesion.

Equipment

DLS maintains a vast array of specialized firefighting equipment to ensure safety and efficiency.  

Insurance

Exceeding standard business liability coverage, DLS maintains a liability policy which explicitly covers damages resulting from prescribed fire.   

Planning

DLS offers formal burn plans which are designed to meet the requirements of state DNR's and the NRCS. Custom burn plans can be developed to meet advanced requirements (BEHAVEplus, NWCG, etc.) Plans are available as a component of our prescribed burn services or as a stand-alone service.

Permitting

DLS has been cooperating with state and local wildland fire regulatory agencies since our inception in 1997. Determining requirements and negotiating the permit process is one of our specialties.
